Standards are the shared language that allow different companies and individuals to communicate about their image quality in a consistent manner. I’m passionate about the fair and useful development of these standards.
ISO TC42 Committee Member: Actively participated in developing international standards for heritage digitization image quality requirements.
OpenQualia Founder: Created and led a working group focused on standardizing image quality reporting formats, enabling better communication across the imaging industry.
CRISP Standard (prepublication): Working with an engineering consulting firm (name under NDA) I wrote the first draft of a proposed image quality standard called Cutting Record and Imaging Standards and Protocols (CRISP) for the oil and gas industry.
Tom Rieger (Library of Congress), Ottar A. B. Anderson (IKAMR, Norway), two of my fellow Technical Committee 42 members, during a conference in Amsterdam.
The best part of TC42 is working with some of the finest minds I’ve ever met.
After twenty years I’ve learned a thing or two about the theory and practice of color profiling. My upcoming short course Camera Color Profiles: The Theory, Practice, and Pitfalls with David R Wyble of Avian Rochester, LLC is the most comprehensive treatment of the subject that I’m aware of.
I led the development and productization of several imaging targets and software used to benchmark and/or monitor image quality and create color profiles.
DT NGT2 Color Quality Target: A professional re-imagining of the prosumer ColorChecker SG made of metal and with cleanable patches
DT Nexus Transmissive Profiling/Validation Targets: The only modern targets made for camera-based film scanning
DT Transmissive Object Level Target: A small and thin target made to sit alongside the subject during mass digitization of film
DT Nexus: Provides 3-channel LUT and 6-channel Matrix profiling for heritage digitization of spectrally challenging materials such as early chromogenic film, sepia-toned photographic prints, and modern fluorescent wide-gamut paints
I had “Colorouroboros” illustrated by a professional artist to serve as the official mascot for the importance of independent color evaluation.
I’ve seen PhDs in color science who still make the very basic faux pas of creating a color profile with a target, and then turning around and using that same target to evaluate the quality of that profile.
